Chan's Story

Jazz pianist and composer Chan Hall’s soothing grooves provide a vibrant, expansive landscape of poetry in motion; influenced by Herbie Hancock, Robert Glasper, Marcus Johnson, Jeff Lorber, Brian Culbertson and many others. The 2011 release of Chan’s debut album "Dreaming Afterdark" gained buzz throughout the mid-Atlantic jazz community. The project is the culmination of a lifetime of dreams deferred for this jazz keyboardist. A native of Wilson, North Carolina, William “Chan” Hall started playing the piano by ear at the age of 15. Chan was a standout percussionist in his high school concert band. He was featured on the xylophone, vibraphone, marimba, bass drum, and auxiliary percussion instruments. During those years, his band instructor introduced him to jazz, studying Chick Corea's music. It was not until a later move to Richmond, Virginia that he took playing the piano and jazz music more seriously. Months of formal classical training followed by private jazz lessons created the genesis of Chan’s distinctive sound. Enrollment in the Jazz Academy at Pine Camp under the direction of world-class jazz saxophonist James “Saxsmo” Gates was the most grueling test of his skills.  In 2015 Chan released his sophomore album titled "Musical Addiction".  The title of this album came about from a conversation involving Chan and his best friend.  This album was a collection of compositions challenged with diversity to become a well rounded album, but proving that contemporary jazz was not the limit for him, and that there were no ceilings for his creativity.  The album turned out to be a mutli-genre album that keeps jazz as it's core. Musical Addiction broke the barrier of the United States reaching International recognition in places such as Italy, England, Germany, and Australia, creating a buzz around the world.  Chan has performed up and down the east coast of the United States, and has shared the stage in various festivals with greats such as, Ramsey Lewis, Herbie Hancock, George Benson, Al Jarreu, Gerald Albright and Norman Brown and others!  His most recent release of his 3rd album in 2017 titled "EnCHANtment" has already started the same cycle spreading among listeners overseas. Chan is now back to business with this new release and this album is back to his roots, back to Comptemporary Jazz.  Enchantment is that cool jazz album for the everyday people looking to relax and wine down.  The media calls Chan a "smooth dude"  being that his music is that therapeutic outlet for relaxation!!!!
